Vinmec successfully applied ‘personalized’ hip & pelvic replacement procedure

VOV.VN – Experts at the Vinmec Center for Orthopedic and Sports Medicine have made a significant breakthrough in the field of hip & pelvic surgery, by successfully researching and implementing a technique known as “Personalized hip and pelvic replacement”.

The “personalized” technique promises patients a “4 Nos” experience: no pain, no blood transfusions, no antibiotics, and no extended hospital stays.

“Customizing” artificial joints

Unlike the typical artificial joints, these customized joints are specifically designed and produced to fit the patient’s unique bone details. Doctors rely on the patient’s 3D joint model to determine the compatible joint.

Dr. Specialist II. Pham Trung Hieu – Head of Hip & Pelvic Surgery Department at the Vinmec Center for Orthopedic and Sports Medicine – shared: ” With this technology, artificial joints can be customized to fit like a glove, meaning almost zero excess that may impact the patient’s daily activities. The artificial joints’ maximum durability can be achieved through proper modelling of their structure, shape, and properties to ensure compatibility with the patient’s bone details. Simultaneously, the potential hazards of joint dislocation or joint loosening are reduced to the minimum.”

Before undergoing hip and pelvic surgery, a computer simulation is built to plan the procedure.

Once the appropriate artificial joint has been chosen based on the patient’s unique characteristics, medical professionals will use specialized software to meticulously plan the procedure. This process ensures that artificial joints are best-placed for optimal movement post-surgery, thereby minimizing the risk of stiffness or limping. Simultaneously, it can forecast potential hazards that may arise during the procedure. Patients and their family members can discuss this information with doctors to gain a more comprehensive understanding of what to anticipate during their operation.

Cutting-edge surgical procedures are now being tailored to meet the unique needs of patients, even those with the most intricate medical conditions.

“Personalized” surgery to meet the most complex needs

The Vinmec Center for Orthopedic and Sports Medicine offers personalized joint replacement procedures for all cases, from the simplest to the most complex. In a remarkable display of medical expertise, doctors at this facility have managed to successfully treat a number of highly complex cases that would have been deemed hopeless elsewhere. These cases include injuries necessitating joint replacement on both sides in a single surgery, chronic ankylosing spondylitis leading to muscle atrophy and loss of motor function, and elderly patients suffering from severe osteoarthritis. Notably, the team even managed to replace a broken bone in a 105-year-old patient, who had been immobilized prior to the procedure.

To name a specific case, Mr. Hoang Van Q., a 48-year-old man from Son La, was diagnosed with grade 4 aseptic necrosis of the femoral head on both sides. After living with this condition for 3 years, Mr. Q finally found hope thanks to an artificial joint replacement. Post-surgery, he was able to stand up and walk without experiencing any discomfort for the first time. Following his surgery, Mr. Q. shared: “I feel very comfortable, unlike before, when I was constantly worried about limping following a hip replacement. My legs are now balanced and I can walk without any pain or complications”. In the case of Dang Van Ch., a 53-year-old resident of Hai Duong, he was afflicted with ankylosing spondylitis. As a result, his left leg had experienced gradual atrophy and had lost nearly all of its motor function. After undergoing a successful personalized hip replacement surgery, he was able to walk with both legs again after over two decades.

After 3 years of living with the condition and being unable to walk, Mr. Q can now walk and cross his legs without any pain, an ability many take for granted, following his personalized hip replacement surgery at Vinmec

For the 79-year-old Mrs. Vo Thanh X., who suffered a broken left femur neck, age meant she had to endure my internal disorders. Yet, only 2 days after surgery, Mrs. X. was able to confidently walk and actively participate in the rehabilitation process.

Following hip and pelvic surgery, patients are able to begin walking shortly thereafter, in a healthy state of physical and mental health.

After a successful recovery period of approximately three weeks, patients are able to forgo the use of crutches and resume their daily activities, including climbing stairs, cycling, squatting, and sleeping without the need for a pillow to separate their previously dislocated legs.

“4 Nos” surgery and post-surgery

From the developed model of the patient, surgeons combine the use of both positioning robots and 3D-printed surgical aids to ensure the precise placement of artificial joints during the operation. This innovative approach consists of two techniques used for the first time in Vietnam, which help operations be more precise, faster, and safer.

According to Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung, Director of the Center, “With the aid of the model, robots, and 3D-printed tools, the operating team can effectively execute the pre-designed plan, resulting in a higher success rate.”

These technological advancements at Vinmec have resulted in “4 Nos” hip and pelvic replacement surgeries.

Accompanying the operations, Vinmec’s Anesthesiology and Pain Management Department has successfully executed a pain relief and resuscitation procedure using a unique technique called nerve block anesthesia. This technique is implemented during the surgery. With this technique, patients experience reduced post-surgery pain with few adverse effects of anesthetics, such as muscle weakness and fatigue.

Additionally, the hospital’s meticulous management of intraoperative blood loss has led to an impressively low rate of transfusion cases, with only one blood unit required for every five surgeries on average. Being a relatively quick operation (approximately 60 minutes) with minimal incision and low blood loss, Vinmec hip and pelvic replacement surgeries do not call for antibiotics post-surgery. This means eliminating concerns about antibiotic resistance or medication fatigue.

At Vinmec, remarkable strides in technology and techniques have led to the development of “4 Nos” surgeries for patients undergoing hip and knee replacement procedures. These surgeries are characterized by the absence of pain, blood transfusions, antibiotics, and extended hospital stays.
