On September 29, 2023, Vinmec Healthcare System organized the International Scientific Conference titled “Innovation in Orthopedics and Rheumatology”, which featured the participation and scientific reports of over 100 experts and doctors from Osaka Metropolitan University and Kanazawa University (Japan), Stanford University (USA), Vinmec Healthcare System, and VinUniversity. In 11 thematic seminars of the Conference, the speakers mostly focused on the cross-cutting themes of application of 3D and AI technologies in skeletal surgery as the state-of-the-art, safe and highly effective interventions today.
Vietnam’s aging population is leading to an increase in bone diseases, and the necessity for early identification in order to successfully treat cancer. In orthopedics, osteoarthritis and bone cancer are currently the two primary areas that are capturing rapt attention. Therefore, the reports presented at the conference were deemed extremely practical, contributing to an increase in the success rate of surgery for arthritis, osteoarthritis, and bone cancer.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hidetomi Terai – Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Osaka Metropolitan University made a report on the superior Biportal Endoscopic Spinal Surgery (BESS) with an incision of less than 1cm to treat age-related spinal degenerative conditions. The application of advanced Japanese practices will enhance the life quality for the elderly in Vietnam, which has a large aging population similar to Japan.
A notable report is the one on comparing the local on-the-spot adjuvant treatment effects for soft tissue tumors by Dr. Naoki Takada-Osaka Metropolitan University. The doctor mentioned the new therapy following the excision of soft tissue cancerous tumors with vascular and neural invasion is able to kill the remaining cancer cells without neurotoxicity, thereby preserves the limb maximum function. In addition, Dr. Takada also touched upon new targeted therapies for soft tissue cancers among the elderly or late-stage patients.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nakase Junsuke – Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Kanazawa University shared about the new conservative therapy for degenerative meniscus tears by ultrasound-guided injection can lead to high success rate of 76% and avoid unnecessary surgery for patients.
Prof. Dr. Mindien H. Nguyen brought to the table one of the cutting-edge and highly feasible researchs from Stanford University (USA): “Early cancer detection by DNA fragment analysis“. Research showed that analysis of plasma DNA fragments can screen for liver cancer early. In the future, the method may also be able to early detect other types of cancer, including bone cancer.
As the host of the conference, Vinmec doctors brought to the conference 4 scientific papers which were stated to not only acclimate the trend of orthopedics in the world but also deliver high treatment efficiency at affordable costs.
MSC, Resident doctor Mr. Vo Sy Quyen Nang – Head of Department of Knee and Ankle Surgery – Vinmec Times City International Hospital reported the application of 3D printing technologies in manufacturing guided surgery models, devices in orthopedics surgery, and potentials of metal implants “made by Vinmec“. 3D printing materials for bone-joint replacement implants at Vinmec are very sophisticated, yet cost 5-7 times cheaper than that in foreign countries, are 2 to 3 weeks shorter in fabrication time, bring compatibility of up to 82% and preserve maximum functions of limbs, bones and joints. By combining simulation and 3D printing technology, precision positioning robots, Vinmec has performed knee replacement surgeries with a joint life expectancy of up to 25 – 30 years, preserving limbs for numerous patients with bone cancer or major surgeries to safely remove 20 cm giant bone tumor located at a rare and dangerous position at the pelvis. Interestingly, Dr. Nang’s report has turned into a very convincing presentation for displaying 3D products at the conference, making the display counter of these debut products very intriguing to viewers.
Prof. Dr. Philippe Macaire – Director of Anesthesia & Pain Relief Department of Vinmec Healthcare System did stay around bone surgery but shared that Botulinum is considered one of the most practical contents of this conference. Botulium is a familiar substance in cosmetology that has now been utilized in musculoskeletal pain relief. He also said that the neuroanesthesia injection technique for bone cancer pain relief is now working effectively at Vinmec. The applications at Vinmec can serve as useful reference for hospitals providing bone cancer treatment today.
Dr. Ferrmandez Martinez Fernado Jose – Director of the Oncology Center, Vinmec Central Park International Hospital fully updated the risks and dangers of bone cancer among children and the latest treatment advances. Therefore, it can be considered as a holistic document for modern bone cancer treatment, to highly optimize imaging diagnosis and the role of immunotherapy.

Bone and soft tissue cancer (sarcoma) is a rare form of highly malignant, easily misdiagnosed cancer that requires complicated treatment - a host of challenges that make its treatment in Vietnam remains a big gap. This situation leads to remarkable disadvantages for the majority of patients.
The prevalence of heart failure in the Southeast Asia region is significantly higher than the rest of the world (4.5–6.7% compared to 0.5–2%) [1]. In the case of cardiac hospitals in Vietnam, heart failure patients account for 15% of total admissions, with a readmission rate within 30 days after discharge rising up to 7% [2].
