Vinmec successfully performed knee surgery for the national athlete Chuong Thi Kieu

Vinmec performed a simultaneous knee surgery on Chuong Thi Kieu’s 2 injured knees. After an extensive 8-hour operation, the surgery was deemed successful. The player has since regained consciousness and is reportedly in good spirits.

National women’s football player, Chuong Thi Kieu, has recently undergone a simultaneous surgery at Vinmec Times City International Hospital, which includes: anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and meniscal suture on the right knee and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction on the left knee. To accelerate the healing process, platelet-rich plasma injections were used.

The surgery was performed by a team of doctors from Vinmec Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center and lasted 8 hours due to the fact that both legs had to be operated on simultaneously.

Previously, on August 26, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) organized a consultation meeting to discuss the injury status and treatment plan for athlete Chuong Thi Kieu. The meeting was attended by representatives from VFF, club representatives, and Vinmec experts in various disciplines, including sports medicine, imaging, anesthesiology, rehabilitation, and nutrition.

In the meeting, it was agreed upon by representatives of VFF, the club, and Chuong Thi Kieu to proceed with the plan proposed by Vinmec Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center. The plan involves undergoing two leg surgeries simultaneously, which was thoroughly analyzed by experts prior to the agreement.

With their strong expertise and wealth of experience in treating sports injury for professional athletes, Vinmec experts diagnosed Chuong Thi Kieu with severe injuries in both legs. Specifically, the athelete suffered from a broken anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee, as well as a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and tear of the posterior meniscal root in her right knee. These injuries have significantly impacted her ability to compete and perform her best.

Following a detailed explanation of treatment options for such a complex injury, an agreement was reached among all parties to proceed with a single-stage surgery for athlete Chuong Thi Kieu, which would involve both legs being operated on simultaneously.

Thanks to such clear communication, Chuong Thi Kieu approached the day of surgery with optimism and determination. Prior to this operation, the female central defender had to undergo a rigorous regimen of physical therapy, rehabilitation exercises, and psychological care. Additionally, her nutrition had to be closely monitored, to ensure optimal physical and mental health. Chuong Thi Kieu was inundated with well wishes for a speedy recovery and return to the field from colleagues, relatives, friends, and a vast number of fans.

Lasting up to 8 hours, Chuong Thi Kieu’s operation was a great challenge for the athlete and operating team. Nevertheless, they managed to overcome the obstacles and achieve the desired outcome.

According to Dr. Vu Tu Nam – representative of the operating team: “Performing surgery on both legs simultaneously in a single operation places significant pressure on both the athlete and the team. Despite a long-standing left anterior cruciate ligament injury, the athlete persisted in competing, resulting in partial loss of joint cartilage and patellar tendonitis, in addition to the previously diagnosed injuries. Despite this challenging situation, the operation was successful and the team was able to achieve maximum restoration for these injuries. After the operation, the patient’s status has been stable.”

One day after surgery, athlete Chuong Thi Kieu is reported to be in a stable condition both physically and mentally. She expressed her delight in receiving a visit from Coach Doan Kim Chi and her fellow teammates from Ho Chi Minh City Club 1.

As next steps, the female athlete will receive comprehensive treatment in accordance with the overall protocol. This will include post-operative care, psychological care, rehabilitation exercises, and nutritional control. Each aspect of the treatment will be personalized to the athlete’s specific condition and recovery status, with the ultimate goal of ensuring safety, appropriateness, and prevention of relapse. The aim is to facilitate a speedy recovery and enable the player to return to top-level competition. Assuming a smooth recovery process, Chuong Thi Kieu is anticipated to resume team practice after approximately 6-7 months.

In 2012, Chuong Thi Kieu underwent surgery to reconstruct her left anterior cruciate ligament. At the recent SEA Games match against the Philippines, an unfortunate incident occurred where the athlete suffered the same injury. Chuong Thi Kieu received a thorough examination, consultation, and comprehensive treatment plan for injuries in both legs from Vinmec Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center’s team of doctors. After a thorough consideration of various factors, including time, psychology, technology, techniques, and experts, it was decided that the athlete would undergo a simultaneous surgery for both of her legs at Vinmec International General Hospital.
